Cheilitis Symptoms
If you seem to have dry cracked skin at the corners of your mouth, particularly during the cold winter months, you have angular cheilitis symptoms. There may be deep splits or cracks on one or both sides of the mouth and they may become inflamed even to the point of bleeding and perhaps becoming infected.
If the condition is left untreated it may become infected by a fungus called Candida albicans or thrush. Studies have shown the problem may be linked to vitamin or nutritional deficiencies in some cases, particularly riboflavin (vitamin B2), as well as Zinc deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. In some cases older people have been know to display angular cheilitis symptoms due to their dentures not fitting correctly or they may be missing teeth altogether, and causing them to over close their mouth or shut it on one side more so than the other.
Generally when angular cheilitis symptoms arise in colder months such as in wintertime, they may be diagnosed as having cheilitis but it is merely a sever case of chapped lips. Children especially may lick their lips in an attempt to moisten them and create an even bigger problem for themselves. The causes run from invasion from bacteria to fungal infections. Treatment or remedies include use of a topical antiseptic cream which must be applied to the area of soreness for several days. If there is infection involved, the person affected must use some sort of over the counter antifungal cream and if the condition persists, a doctor should be sought for advice. The angular cheilitis symptoms will generally subside on their own within a few days if the area is kept clean and lotion is applied.
In some instances involving severely dry and cracked skin about the mouth area, a malabsorbtion syndrome may be to blame, creating angular cheilitis symptoms. Giving vitamin B-12 shots may prove useful or even entire B complex shots may be advised. This will be determined according to the severity of the symptoms and how well the problem responds to use of the antiseptic or antifungal cream initially applied.
A deficiency in many of the B vitamins can be cause of angular cheilitis symptoms. These include niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), riboflavin (B2), and cyanocobalamin (B12). Acidic acid can exacerbate the condition and drinking orange juice or lemonade may cause the mouth to become dryer and cracking to increase. Advice from a doctor is highly recommended to rule out infection and fungal diseases. Cheilitis Symptoms
